Is it Wrong to be Scared of the Future?

It is not wrong to be scared of the future. In fact, the Bible acknowledges fear as a necessary ingredient in right living. It is an attitude compounded of a recognition of the greatness and the righteousness of God. However, the Bible also warns against the dangers of trying to interpret the future apart from God. This can lead people astray and into great spiritual darkness. God says that he will give us grace to face the future, and we can trust in his sovereignty over all creation.

The fear of the future can be overwhelming, especially when we look at the news or consider the uncertainties of life. It's easy to get caught up in the false narrative that we're not worth much to God or anybody else. However, the Bible tells us that the future belongs to God, and only he can reveal it. Instead of trying to master the future, we should find enjoyment in what is at hand. This doesn't mean living a life of hedonism or irresponsibility, but rather one of simplicity and commitment in the fear of God.

Ultimately, our fear of the future should not be driven by a pragmatic and extrinsic motivation, such as avoiding consequences or seeking comfort. Rather, it should be driven by a love for our Savior and Master. We should rely on the instrument panel of Scripture, which gives us guidance on how to navigate the unknown. By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, we can face the future with courage and hope, even in the midst of uncertainty. As the Bible says, "Do not worry about your life... it is not only wrong to worry, it is unbelief." (Matthew 6:25) We can trust that God will give us the grace to face whatever lies ahead.
