Your Question:
What happens when I'm no longer able to work?
Answer:
The question of what happens when I'm no longer able to work. As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with this very issue. If I'm no longer able to work, I'm grateful that my wife Susan and I have been diligent in planning for our future. We've worked hard to save and invest for our retirement, so that we can continue to live comfortably, even if I'm no longer able to contribute to our household income. But, as I reflect on this question, I'm also reminded that our identity and worth are not tied to our work. As a Christian, I believe that my value and purpose come from my relationship with God, not from my job. If I'm no longer able to work, I trust that God will provide for us and give us the strength and wisdom we need to navigate this new chapter in our lives. In fact, I've often thought about the apostle Paul's words in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, "For even when we were with you, we would give you this rule: 'If a man will not work, he shall not eat.' " But I also believe that this verse is not meant to be taken out of context. As a Christian, I'm called to be a good steward of the gifts and abilities God has given me, and to work with integrity and diligence. But if I'm no longer able to work, I trust that God will provide for me and my family, and give us the opportunity to serve Him in new and different ways.
