The Bible Teaches that There Will be Work in Heaven

The Bible teaches that there will be work in heaven. In fact, Revelation 22:2 says, "Through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." This verse suggests that there will be a continuation of work in heaven, specifically in the healing of nations. This work will be a continuation of the Great Commission, which Jesus gave to his disciples in Matthew 28:18-20. Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the end of the age." This commission is not limited to the present age, but will continue in heaven.

The Nature of Work in Heaven

The nature of work in heaven will be different from what we experience on earth. In heaven, there will be no more fighting against opposing forces, no more struggle against sin and Satan. Revelation 21:4 says, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." This verse suggests that in heaven, there will be a complete absence of pain and suffering. Instead, there will be rest and worship. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews says, "For we are not commending ourselves to you but giving you reason why we write this, to be sure that as you study the things we write you may have a basis for knowing that we are true ministers of God and that you are standing firm in faith." This verse suggests that in heaven, there will be a continued emphasis on faith and obedience.

The Purpose of Work in Heaven

The purpose of work in heaven will be to glorify God and to continue the work of redemption. Revelation 22:3 says, "And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and his servants shall worship him." This verse suggests that the primary purpose of work in heaven will be to worship God and to give him glory.
