The Purpose of Life: A Christian Perspective

The purpose of life is a question that has puzzled humanity for centuries. From a Christian perspective, the answer is clear: we were created by God for a purpose. Our purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy a relationship with Him. This is not just a vague idea, but a specific and intentional plan that God has for each of us. As the Bible says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10).

Finding Purpose in Suffering

For those who may be struggling with physical or emotional limitations, such as being confined to a wheelchair, it can be tempting to feel like life has no purpose. But this is not the case. Even in the midst of suffering, we can find purpose and meaning in our lives. As the 23rd Psalm says, "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, my God. I will exult and I will not be silent; the Lord, my God, is my salvation" (Psalm 23:4-5). Our purpose is not to be free from suffering, but to find joy and contentment in God, even in the midst of it. As one author notes, "Though I am extremely impaired, and I cannot take care of my baby; yet I will rejoice in the Lord" (Psalm 23:4-5). Our purpose is to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we don't understand what's happening in our lives.

A Life of Purpose and Meaning

So, what is the purpose of life? It is to know God and to make Him known. It is to live a life that is pleasing to Him, and to bring glory to His name. This is not a vague or arbitrary goal, but a specific and intentional plan that God has for each of us. As the Bible says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). Our purpose is to live a life of purpose and meaning, a life that is filled with joy, contentment, and a deep sense of fulfillment. And this is only possible when we trust in God and follow His plan for our lives. As one author notes, "Let us consider two additional reasons for this expectation of relief: i. Consider His mercy, tenderness, and kindness as He cleanses us from our sins" (Isaiah 1:18). Our purpose is to know God and to experience His mercy, tenderness, and kindness in our lives. And this is only possible when we trust in Him and follow His plan for our lives.
