Should Christians fear God?

The Bible teaches that Christians should fear God. In Deuteronomy 6:1-2, God instructs the Israelites to fear the Lord their God as long as they live by keeping all His decrees and commands. This fear is not limited to a feeling of reverence and awe, but is a response of their entire being. When God teaches us to fear Him, He usually does it in a way that is astonishing. For example, the Israelites feared God so much when they heard Him speak on Mount Sinai that they begged Moses to speak to God on their behalf (Exodus 20:18-19).

However, the fear of God is not a response of fear that we will be damned, but rather a fear that somehow Jesus Christ will be defeated. It is a fear that the things our Lord stood for, such as love, justice, forgiveness, and kindness among men, will not win out in the end. This fear is not a cringing fear, but rather a fear that motivates us to live a life that reflects Christian values and teachings. As Psalm 111:10 says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." When we keep the Lord's commands, we demonstrate our fear of Him, and this fear is the beginning of knowledge.
