What happens when I lose everything?
The Paradox of Loss and Gain
When we lose everything, it may seem like the end of the world. But, according to Jesus, "whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it" (Mark 8:35). This is not to say that we lose our individuality, but rather that our will is submitted to Christ's will. In fact, the more we lose, the more we gain. As Paul writes, "I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own" (Philippians 3:8).
Losing Our Life to Save It
Losing our life to save it means that we must give up our own will, self-seeking, and pride. This is a paradox, as it seems counterintuitive that losing something would result in gaining something. However, when we give up our own desires and ambitions, we find true peace, joy, and satisfaction. As Jesus teaches, "if anyone wills to save his life, he will lose it; but if anyone will lose his life for My sake, he will find it" (Matthew 16:25). This is not a call to be morbid or suicidal, but rather a call to surrender our lives to God and trust in His sovereignty.
The Importance of Losing Our Life for Christ
Losing our life for Christ is not just a matter of individual salvation, but also has implications for the body of Christ. When we surrender our lives to Christ, we become a part of His body, and He becomes a part of us. This is why Jesus says, "for whoever loses his life for my sake will save it" (Luke 9:24). When we lose our lives for Christ, we gain a new perspective, a new purpose, and a new power to live for Him. As Paul writes, "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me" (Galatians 2:20). This is the ultimate paradox of loss and gain, where we lose our old life to gain a new life in Christ.
