The Freedom of Choosing God's Way

In considering the question of how to choose between freedom and security when life gets busy, it is essential to understand the nature of true freedom. True freedom is not a general, abstract concept, but rather a spiritual and moral one, rooted in our relationship with God. It is the freedom to live as God intended, free from sin and its consequences. This type of freedom is not absolute, but rather dependent on our willingness to submit to God's truth and His sovereignty over our lives.

The Security of God's Sovereignty

In contrast to the idea of freedom as a general, abstract concept, the Bible teaches that our freedom is not independent of God's sovereignty. In fact, our freedom is deeply connected to God's will and purposes for our lives. As the Bible says, "I have set before you life and death, therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19). This means that our choices are not arbitrary, but rather are guided by God's will and truth. In this sense, our freedom is not a freedom to do whatever we want, but rather a freedom to choose God's way, even when it is difficult or costly.

The Freedom to Choose God's Way

In the midst of a busy life, it can be tempting to prioritize security over freedom. However, the Bible teaches that true freedom is found in submitting to God's sovereignty and choosing His way. This requires a willingness to let go of our own desires and ambitions, and to trust in God's goodness and wisdom. As the Bible says, "My freedom must be understood as my ability to choose among options in light of who I am. And who I am is a result of God's decision and activity" (Romans 9:16). By choosing to submit to God's sovereignty, we find true freedom, not in the sense of doing whatever we want, but in the sense of living as God intended, free from sin and its consequences. This freedom is not a freedom to get or subsist, but a freedom to live as God's children, with all the privileges and responsibilities that come with it.
