Breaking Down Barriers and Showing Kindness

When we feel isolated, it can be challenging to show kindness to those around us without expecting anything in return. However, as the Bible teaches us, kindness and truth are essential to building meaningful relationships. In Proverbs 3:27-28, it says, "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it's in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, 'Come back later; I'll give it to you then,' when it's already time to give, and you don't do it." This verse reminds us that showing kindness is not just about feeling like it, but about being intentional and proactive in our relationships.

One way to show kindness without expecting anything in return is to focus on the other person's needs rather than our own. When we meet someone, our part is to give them our attention and interest, to show them goodwill, and to open up in a friendly way. From there, it's up to them to decide whether they want to know us or not. This approach helps us to avoid putting conditions on our kindness, which can lead to feelings of resentment and obligation. Instead, we can focus on building genuine relationships that are based on mutual respect and care.

In order to show kindness to those around us without expecting anything in return, we need to be willing to take the initiative and make an effort to connect with others. This might involve inviting someone for coffee, offering to help them with a task, or simply being present in their lives. As the Bible says in Hebrews 10:24-25, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." By being proactive and intentional in our relationships, we can build bridges of kindness and love that bring joy and fulfillment to ourselves and others.
