Your Question:
How do I cope with the loss of my independence?
Answer:
Coping with the loss of independence can be a challenging issue for many men, including myself. As a pastor, I've seen many individuals struggle with this concept. In my own life, I've come to realize that independence is often viewed as a sign of strength, maturity, and manhood. However, this understanding is a misunderstanding of real manhood and is not a biblical truth. Interdependence, on the other hand, is often seen as a sign of weakness, but it's actually a more biblical and healthy approach to relationships. As I reflect on my own life, I've learned that independence can lead to self-pity and a sense of control that's not truly ours to have. When we focus on our own independence, we can become isolated and lose sight of God's perspective. In contrast, when we focus on God and our interdependence on Him, we can find freedom and strength in our relationships with others. This is especially true in my marriage with Susan. By being willing to be vulnerable and interdependent with her, I've found a deeper sense of connection and intimacy that I wouldn't have experienced otherwise. So, how do I cope with the loss of independence? I've learned to ask God to put awareness of Himself in me, and to trust that He will be my all in all. I've also learned to view difficulties as faith issues, rather than focusing on my own problems. By doing so, I've found that God shows up in a more magnificent way, and I'm able to find strength and freedom in Him. As I've said to myself, "Lord, when I fail, I will trust in You and seek Your guidance and support." By being proactive and seeking accountability, I've been able to develop a new strategy for handling failure and finding freedom in my relationships with others.
