Can small acts of kindness bridge the gap between strangers when we're feeling overwhelmed?
The Power of Kindness in Overcoming Overwhelm
When we're feeling overwhelmed, it's natural to feel disconnected from others and struggle to show kindness. However, small acts of kindness can indeed bridge the gap between strangers and help us feel more connected. The Bible teaches us that kindness is a powerful tool that can bring people together and create a sense of community. In Proverbs 31:26, we're encouraged to "open our mouth with kindness" and to "bind kindness and truth around our neck" (Proverbs 3:3). This means that kindness is not just a feeling, but a choice we make to show love and compassion to others.
When we choose to be kind, even in the midst of overwhelm, we're not just helping others, we're also helping ourselves. Kindness has a way of breaking down barriers and creating a sense of empathy and understanding. As the Bible says, "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully" (Romans 12:6-8). By choosing to serve, teach, encourage, or show mercy, we're not only helping others, but also exercising our own gifts and talents.
In the story of the homeless person I met, kindness was the key to bridging the gap between us. We were able to have a meaningful conversation and connect on a deeper level because of the kindness he showed me. This is not to say that we didn't have our differences, but kindness allowed us to see beyond our differences and connect on a human level. As the Bible says, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). By choosing to be kind, even in the midst of overwhelm, we're not only showing love to others, but also demonstrating the character of God.
