The Role of Mercy in the Face of Judgment

Mercy and judgment are two attributes of God that are often viewed as contradictory. However, mercy is not the vicarious endurance of punishment for the sinner, but rather a tenderhearted, loving compassion for the sinner. Mercy sees the sinner as miserable and needy, rather than as guilty and condemned. In the face of judgment, mercy can be exercised by withholding merited penalty and relieving distress. This is seen in the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, where mercy removes the guilt and penalty of sin, and grace imputes righteousness.

The exercise of mercy is sovereign and optional, and cannot be determined by human reason. It is not a matter of debt or obligation, but rather a gift of God's compassion and mercy. The ultimate manifestation of mercy is seen in the salvation of sinners through Jesus Christ, where those who were condemned are given freedom from punishment and guilt. This is not a contradiction of justice, but rather a fulfillment of God's justice, which is satisfied by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

In the context of judgment, mercy is not a substitute for justice, but rather a complement to it. Justice is necessary to punish the guilty and to vindicate God's righteousness, while mercy is necessary to show compassion and relief to those who are suffering. In the face of judgment, mercy can be exercised by withholding punishment and relieving distress, rather than by trampling upon justice.
