The Concept of Debt in Scripture

The concept of debt in scripture is multifaceted. On one hand, debt refers to the inability to meet obligations agreed upon, as financial adviser Larry Burkett clarifies. On the other hand, debt can also represent the guiltiness of sin, which is to owe the suffering of punishment or an obligement to the curse which follows sin. In this sense, debt is not just a financial issue but a spiritual one. The Bible teaches that sin is a debt that must be paid, but it is not just a matter of meeting a financial obligation. Rather, it is a matter of meeting the demands of God's justice and thereby releasing the sinner from his own obligation to do this.

The Nature of Medical Debt

Medical debt can be seen as a type of debt that is not necessarily a sin in and of itself. Refusing necessary medical attention is foolish, but not sinful. However, the question of whether medical debt is a sin is more complex.
