Can I really trust medical professionals?

The Nature of Trust

Trust is a fundamental aspect of any relationship, including the one between a patient and a medical professional. However, as we delve deeper into the complexities of trust, we begin to realize that it is not always a straightforward issue. The Bible reminds us that, "without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" (Hebrews 11:6). Similarly, in our interactions with medical professionals, we must have faith that they will act in our best interests.

The Limits of Human Knowledge

One of the primary challenges in trusting medical professionals is the limits of human knowledge. As Nobel Laureate physiologist Dr. Charles Scott Sherrington notes, "Some physicians reject these claims as truly miraculous. It is important to discern that these phenomena will ultimately have a natural explanation, but some physicians disregard it, and confusion and error will result." This highlights the fact that medical professionals, like all humans, are fallible and may not always have the answers. Moreover, as we see in the example of the patient who becomes a Christian, even medical professionals can experience spiritual transformations that challenge their worldview and understanding of the world.

The Sovereignty of God

In the face of uncertainty and the limits of human knowledge, it is essential to recognize the sovereignty of God. As the Bible reminds us, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9). This means that, ultimately, God is in control, and His ways are higher than our own. By acknowledging this, we can trust that God is working through medical professionals, even when we do not fully understand their actions or decisions. This trust is not blind, but rather, it is rooted in a deep understanding of God's character and sovereignty. As we entrust ourselves to medical professionals, we must also remember to entrust ourselves to God, who is the ultimate Healer and Provider. As Stanley Hauerwas writes, "It may be that the demand for euthanasia comes because we lack the skills humanely to know how to care for the dying, and that the demand for euthanasia is a symptom of our lack of skill in being human." This highlights the importance of recognizing the limitations of human knowledge and the need for a deeper understanding of the human condition, which can only be found in a personal relationship with God. By acknowledging our dependence on God and His sovereignty, we can cultivate a deeper trust in medical professionals and in the ultimate Healer, who is God Himself.
