Your Question:
How do I find hope when everything feels hopeless?
Answer:
My friend, I've seen many faces of hopelessness in my years as a pastor, but I've also seen the power of hope in the face of despair. Hopelessness is a lethal enemy, but it's not a permanent one. As the passage says, "On this side of the cross, misery persists but the scales are tipped in favor of joy." We have to pray for eyes to see the realities that can sustain our hopes. When we're faced with dashed hopes, it's easy to give up. But that's exactly when we need to dig deeper. We need to remember and meditate on God's story, and seek Him in His temple. Psalm 27:4 says, "One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple." Hope grows in the ground of humility, and it's a skill that develops over time with the reminders of the body of Christ. So, what can you do when everything feels hopeless? First, take action in the present. Don't just sit and wait; do something to move forward. Check off that to-do list by faith, and trust that God is working in you. Second, seek out the reminders of the body of Christ - go to church, join a study group, or find a friend who can walk with you through this dark time. And finally, remember that hope is a choice. You can choose to let go of hope, or you can choose to hold onto it, even when it feels like it's slipping away. I've seen it time and time again in my own life and in the lives of those I've counseled - with God, there is always hope.
