How do we balance peace and justice?
Balancing peace and justice is a complex issue that has been debated by philosophers, theologians, and politicians for centuries. On one hand, peace is often associated with a sense of well-being, completeness, and totality, which is the presence of Christ in our lives. However, this does not mean that we will feel good about it when it may conflict with our natural desires. On the other hand, justice is seen through the expression of God's righteous standards in the community of the faithful and the world in need. Social justice, by contrast, grounds its understanding of justice in human experiences and social conditions.
To achieve a balance between peace and justice, we need to consider the concept of shalom, which refers to well-being. Paul's wish is for the Ephesians to experience this in fullness. The right direction leads not only to peace but to knowledge. When a man is getting better, he understands more and more clearly the evil that he has committed. This understanding can lead to a sense of remorse and a desire to make amends. In this sense, justice and peace are intertwined, and one cannot exist without the other.
In our pursuit of peace and justice, we must walk down one of two paths. We can find the ultimate measure of good in this world, perhaps in the fight of the oppressed against their oppressors, or in the free market system. Alternatively, we can find the ultimate measure of good in the expression of God's righteous standards in the community of the faithful and the world in need. The latter path is rooted in the biblical concept of justice, which is not just about treating people equally, but also about treating them with compassion and mercy. By following this path, we can create a society that values both peace and justice, and where individuals can live in harmony with God, others, and themselves.
