Can a person still be a good Christian if they struggle with bitterness?
The Bible teaches that bitterness is a root that can cause trouble and defile many (Hebrews 12:15). This means that if a Christian struggles with bitterness, it can negatively impact their relationship with God and others. However, it is possible for a person to still be a good Christian even if they struggle with bitterness. In fact, the Bible teaches that Christians should forgive those who wrong them, even if they do not deserve it (Matthew 6:14-15, Luke 6:27-36). This does not mean that forgiveness is easy or that it will not take time and effort. But it does mean that Christians should strive to forgive and release bitterness, rather than allowing it to consume them.
Jesus gives us the solution to bitterness in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:21-26). He teaches that Christians should not only forgive those who wrong them, but also pray for and bless those who curse them. This is not always easy, but it is possible with the help of the Holy Spirit. In fact, the Bible teaches that Christians are able to forgive because they have been forgiven by God (Ephesians 4:32). When we forgive, we are not saying that the hurt or wrong was okay, but rather that we are choosing to release the bitterness and anger associated with it.
So, can a person still be a good Christian if they struggle with bitterness? Yes, but it requires effort and a willingness to forgive and release bitterness. It is not about ignoring the hurt or wrong, but rather about choosing to forgive and pray for those who have wronged us. As Paul says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen" (Ephesians 4:29). By choosing to forgive and release bitterness, Christians can live a life that reflects God's love and character, even in the midst of struggle.
