The Futility of Material Wealth

The pursuit of material wealth is a futile endeavor. As the proverb states, "You can't take it with you" (Proverbs 2:18-19). No matter how hard you work or how much wealth you accumulate, you cannot take it with you when you die. This is a warning for those who think that gaining wealth through dubious means will bring them advantage (Proverbs 28:19). In fact, the Bible teaches that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). This is why it is essential to be content with what you have and not be envious of others (Proverbs 4:4).

The Purpose of Work

The purpose of work is not to accumulate wealth, but to provide gain that puts one in a position to be of help to others in need (Ephesians 4:28). This is illustrated in the example of Paul, who worked as a tentmaker to support himself and not be a burden to others (Acts 20:34). The Bible teaches that we should work heartily, putting our back into it and giving it our best effort (Colossians 3:23-24). This is not just about getting a job done, but about modeling a well-done job and teaching others what it looks like.

The Dangers of Materialism

Materialism can lead to a life of distraction and discontentment. When we prioritize wealth and material possessions over our relationship with God, we risk losing sight of what is truly important. The Bible warns against the dangers of greed and the love of money, which can lead to a life of poverty and emptiness (Proverbs 28:19). By contrast, a life of hard work and dedication to God's purposes can bring a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, even in the midst of difficulties (Philippians 4:12). Ultimately, the purpose of work is to glorify God and bring joy to others, not just to accumulate wealth.
