The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering is a necessary part of the Christian life. It is a means by which God can work in our lives to make us stronger, build our character, and deepen our faith. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong." Suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and maturity.

The Importance of Trusting God

When we are suffering, it can be tempting to question God's sovereignty and purpose. However, as Paul writes in Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." We must trust that God is working in our lives, even when we cannot see the purpose of our suffering. This requires faith and surrender to God's will. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 138:8, "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands."

The Role of Prayer

Prayer is a vital part of enduring suffering. We must learn to pray, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil" (Matthew 6:13, KJV). This requires a willingness to surrender to God's will and trust in His power. We must also learn conversational prayer, which involves speaking with God in a personal and intimate way. This can help us to feel less alone in our suffering and to experience God's presence and comfort. As the psalmist writes in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." By trusting God and praying to Him, we can find strength and comfort in the midst of suffering.
