The Nature of Faith

Faith is not just a feeling or an opinion, but a personal decision and an act of affirmation. It involves risk, personal commitment, and obedience to God's revealed truths. Faith is not based on probability or human opinions, but on the certainty of God's Word and His promises. As C. S. Lewis says, "Faith begins with the according of credence to revealed truths, not as popular, or probable, human opinions, but as words uttered by the Creator."

Faith and Uncertainty

Faith is not about having no doubts or uncertainties, but about trusting God in the midst of them. As the Bible says, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). Faith involves a leap into the unknown, trusting that God will do what He has promised. This means that faith must rest on something more sure than an inference of probability, namely, the certainty of God's Word and His character.

The Testing of Faith

The testing of faith is a normal part of the Christian life. As the Bible says, "The testing of your faith produces patience... that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing" (James 1:3-4). When we face challenges and difficulties, our faith is tested, and we have a choice to make: we can either let our faith grow stronger or let it weaken. The good news is that our faith will grow stronger if we respond to challenges with obedience, trust, and faith. As we face the noise and distractions of the world, our faith will be tested, but with patience and perseverance, we can emerge stronger and more confident in our faith.
