What if I Can't Afford Food?

When considering the command to not eat (Deuteronomy 14:26-27), some people might say, "But I can't afford food." This phrase is often a code for "I can't afford to tithe and still do all the things I am doing now." In essence, it means that giving to God through tithing would require significant lifestyle changes. However, Jesus teaches that our priorities should be focused on spiritual growth and giving to God, rather than accumulating wealth and material possessions.

Jesus' words in Matthew 6:24, "You cannot serve both God and money," highlight the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God above our financial situation. While it's true that some people may struggle to afford basic necessities, including food, this should not be an excuse to neglect our spiritual responsibilities. Instead, we should seek God's guidance on how to manage our finances and prioritize our giving to Him.

In Luke 12:15, Jesus warns against greed and the love of money, saying, "Beware of being greedy for wealth; be satisfied with what you have." He also teaches that those who work hard and are content with their lot will be satisfied with plenty of food (Proverbs 28:19). Therefore, if we're struggling to afford food, we should examine our priorities and consider how we can reorient our focus towards God and His kingdom. This might involve making lifestyle changes, seeking guidance from God, and trusting in His provision for our needs.
