The Biblical View of Possessions

In the Bible, possessions are not inherently sinful, but they can become a source of bondage and idolatry if they dominate a person's life. Jesus taught that one must not serve God and material wealth, emphasizing that true value lies in God's love and relationship with Him (Matthew 6:24). Paul also acknowledged that believers are not to be overly attached to their possessions, as they are not permanent and will one day belong to God (1 Corinthians 7:25-40).

The Christian's Attitude towards Possessions

Christians are called to live a life of simplicity and dependence on God, recognizing that their true wealth lies in their relationship with Him. Rather than accumulating possessions, they should focus on building a storehouse of heavenly wealth, which includes peace, hope, and joy in God's love (1 Timothy 6:19). This means adopting a mindset of generosity and stewardship, using their possessions to bless others and to spread the Gospel. As Jesus said, "Sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me" (Luke 12:33).

The Purpose of Possessions

The ultimate purpose of possessions is not to provide security or happiness, but to be used for the glory of God and the advancement of His kingdom. Believers are called to be good stewards of their resources, using them to spread the Gospel, care for the poor, and build up the body of Christ. As Paul wrote, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7). By living a life of generosity and dependence on God, Christians can experience true freedom and joy, and their possessions can become a means of blessing others and glorifying God.
