Biblical Answer

The darkness that often accompanies depression, anxiety, or other forms of suffering can make it difficult to see any hope on the horizon. However, even in the midst of such darkness, there is always the possibility of dawn. This is where love comes in - it has the power to raise questions, pointing beyond the present darkness to a future hope. Love is not just a feeling, but a choice that requires effort and sacrifice. It is the surest test of having life, and it has already been shown to be the test of being in the light (2:10). Love never fails, and it is the basis for our hope that God has reconciled himself to believers and will therefore save them from the eschatological wrath that will be poured out on the final day (5:9). This hope, in turn, gives us the strength to face the darkness and to trust that God is working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28).

When love is put to the test, it reveals our true character and intentions. As the apostle John wrote, love serves as a basis for the believer's hope that God has reconciled himself to believers and will therefore save them from the eschatological wrath that will be poured out on the final day (5:9). This hope, furthermore, receives its full expression in the person of Jesus Christ, who demonstrated perfect love for God and for others through his life, death, and resurrection. As we learn to love others as Jesus loves us, we will begin to experience the transformative power of love in our lives. This is not a natural response that comes easily, but rather a choice that requires us to put others before ourselves and to sacrifice our own interests for the sake of others.

In the midst of darkness and suffering, love can be a source of hope and comfort. When we choose to love others, even in the face of adversity, we demonstrate our trust in God's goodness and sovereignty. As we do so, we can expect to experience the fruit of the Spirit, including love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). This is not a guarantee that our circumstances will change, but it is a promise that God is working everything out for our good, even in the midst of suffering. As we trust in God's love and sovereignty, we can find hope in the darkness, even when it seems like everything is falling apart. By choosing to love others, we can experience the transformative power of love and find a sense of peace and comfort that transcends our circumstances.
