The Value of Humility in Times of Pride

Defining Pride and Humility

Pride is an exalted, inflated opinion of oneself, a lie; humility takes a realistic picture of oneself, recognizing strengths and weaknesses. The biblical view of humility is precisely not feigned or groveling, nor a sanctimonious or pathetic lack of self-esteem, but rather a mark of moral strength and integrity. It involves an unadorned recognition of ones own limitations and weaknesses, as well as a deep awareness of ones own sinfulness and need for God.

The Importance of Humility in Times of Pride

Humility is a virtue by which a man has a low opinion of himself because he knows himself well. This means that humility is not about thinking poorly of oneself, but rather about having a realistic assessment of who we are in relation to God and others. Humility also reflects a commitment to embrace truth wherever it leads, as best we can discern it. This dedication to truth will include adjusting my theological understanding or refining my moral judgments. Humility is the Christlike attitude towards oneself, supremely exemplified in that readiness to forgo his own rights which led the Son of God to the incarnation and cross.

The Relationship Between Humility and Pride

Pride is a false advertising campaign because we suspect others wont accept who we really are. Sinful pride is thinking of self more highly than I ought to think (Rom 12:3). Pride is one of the seven deadly sins (Prov. 6:16, 17), an evil that comes from the heart (Mark 7:21-23). We must not think Pride is something God forbids because He is offended at it, or that Humility is something He demands as due to His own dignity. Rather, God is not in the least worried about His dignity, but is concerned with the state of our hearts. Humility, on the other hand, is a virtue that God rewards and values, and is essential for living a life that reflects Christian values and teachings. Ultimately, humility is the antidote to pride, and is essential for a healthy and vibrant relationship with God and others.
