The Parable of the Good Samaritan: A Model of Love

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches what it means to love one's neighbor. The parable tells the story of a man who is beaten and left for dead on the side of the road. A priest and a Levite pass by, but they do not help him. However, a Samaritan, a member of a group that the Jewish people did not get along with, stops to help the man. He bandages his wounds, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care. This story illustrates what it means to love one's neighbor as oneself. The Good Samaritan shows compassion and kindness to someone who is in need, just as we would want someone to show compassion and kindness to us if we were in need.

The Command to Love

The command to love one's neighbor as oneself is a central teaching of Jesus. He says that this command is like the first commandment, to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind (Mark 12:29-30). In other words, loving one's neighbor is an expression of our love for God. Jesus also says that this command is the second of the two greatest commandments, and that it is like the first commandment in that it is a command to love (Matthew 22:35-40). This command is not just about feeling love for others, but about acting in a way that demonstrates love for others. It involves showing compassion, kindness, and generosity to those in need.

The Scope of Love

Jesus teaches that the command to love one's neighbor is not limited to loving those who are like us or who are easy to love. Rather, it includes loving our enemies and those who treat us with antagonism and enmity (Matthew 5:38-48). This is because loving one's neighbor is an expression of our love for God, and God loves everyone, regardless of who they are or how they treat us. Therefore, Jesus says that we should love our neighbors as ourselves, not just because we love them, but because we love God. This means that we should show compassion and kindness to everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.
