The Paradox of Happiness

Happiness is a paradoxical concept. On one hand, it seems that having what we want, including wealth and material possessions, would bring us joy and satisfaction. However, this is not always the case. Research has shown that once our basic needs are met, additional wealth does not necessarily lead to greater happiness. In fact, experts have discovered that choosing money over friends and family is a sure path to unhappiness (1).

The Heart Habits of Happiness

So, what leads to happiness? It is not the external circumstances or relational status, but rather the overflow of a healthy heart. Happiness is not synonymous with wealth, beauty, marriage, or singleness. Rather, it is a result of mastering certain heart habits, such as generosity, gratitude, and self-control. When we give to others, even if it means sacrificing some of our own desires, we experience a sense of fulfillment and joy. As the saying goes, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need" (Mick Jagger) (2). In other words, happiness is not about getting what we want, but about living a life that is authentic and meaningful.

The Sovereignty of God

As believers, we must remember that God is sovereign over all creation, including our lives and circumstances. He always ignores our present level of completeness in favor of our ultimate future completeness. This means that He may not give us what we want, but He will give us what we need to be happy and fulfilled. As we seek to live a life that reflects Christian values and teachings, we must trust in God's sovereignty and provision. We must also prioritize our health and well-being, recognizing that good health is more fundamental to happiness than wealth. By doing so, we will find that true happiness is not about getting what we want, but about living a life that is surrendered to God and guided by His Word. (3) Answer Key:
