The Bible's Teaching on Lying

The Bible teaches that lying is a serious sin against God, against the Church, and against love. God is truth and cannot lie (Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18), and his word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus is the truth (Jn 14:6), and the Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (John 14:17). The Bible warns that lying will be far more unpleasant than the consequences of telling the truth, and a false witness will not go unpunished (Proverbs 19:5).

The Nature of Deception

Lying is a violation of the truth that includes a conscious intent to deceive. It denies the character of God who is truth and whose word embodies truth. Lying takes many forms, including deceitful words, actions, and even silence. Falsehood and lying come not from God but from Satan, who delights in falsehood. The Bible teaches that it is impossible for God to lie, and Jesus repeatedly says, "I tell you the truth." The Spirit of truth has been given to believers to guide them in truth and righteousness.

Consequences of Lying

The consequences of lying can be severe. Those who lie feel the consequences of shame, and one little lie can turn into two little lies, and so on. The Bible warns that those who lie will not escape punishment, and that lying is a great sin against God, against the Church, and against love. In Revelation 21:8, it is written that all liars will be found in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur far from the heavenly city. Therefore, it is essential to turn from lies and cultivate a life of truth and integrity, as Jesus taught, "Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No" (Matthew 5:37).
