The Purpose of Prayer: A Deeper Understanding

Prayer is often viewed as a means to change circumstances or alter feelings, but this perspective is limited and misunderstands the true purpose of prayer. As Christians, we pray because prayer is a means of dependence on God, not a demand that assumes we can make Him do what we want. Prayer is a way of aligning ourselves with God's holy will and discerning His plan for our lives. It is not a matter of changing things externally, but rather working on the inside, changing our perspective and understanding of the world.

Prayer Changes Us, Not Just Circumstances

Prayer has a built-in logic of mediation, a directionality, and a grain. When we pray, we are not just asking God to change circumstances, but also to change us. Our strong desire to pray and seek God's will is what sets faith and hope to work, and ultimately, moves the hand of God in ways we can hardly comprehend. As the prophet Samuel said, "Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you" (1 Samuel 12:23 nasb). This shows that prayer is not just about changing things externally, but also about maintaining a deep and abiding relationship with God.

Prayer and the Sovereignty of God

Some may ask, "Isn't God in control? He never changes His mind, does He?" The answer is that God's sovereignty does not negate the importance of prayer. Prayer is not a means of trying to change God's mind, but rather a way of aligning ourselves with His will and plan. As the Bible says, "Prayer pushes eternity back into our lives, making God ever more relevant to the way we live our lives" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer is not a means of trying to control God, but rather a way of surrendering to His sovereignty and allowing Him to work in our lives. Ultimately, prayer changes us, not just circumstances, and helps us to live a life that is more aligned with God's holy will.
