Your Question:

How do we respond when our rights are challenged?

Answer:

As a pastor and a Christian, I believe that our rights, especially those that are positive, can be a double-edged sword. While they may seem beneficial, they can also lead to an overreliance on the government and a depletion of resources. In a democracy, the majority rules, and if the government has decided on a course of action that some citizens disagree with, they may have little choice but to accept it. However, this doesn't mean that we should simply roll over and accept it. We can still express our disagreement through various forms of protest, even if they may have limited effect.

As I see it, the key to responding when our rights are challenged is to understand the difference between negative and positive rights. Negative rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and property, are minimal rights of non-interference. They are the right not to be harmed, coerced, or enslaved by others. Governments have a minimal duty to protect against such interference. Positive rights, on the other hand, are claims to assistance or promotion of another's welfare. While they may seem appealing, they can lead to an overreach of government power and a depletion of resources.

In my experience as a pastor, I've seen that the best way to respond to challenges to our rights is to focus on living a Christian life, building a Christian home, and radiating the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. When we do this, we not only fulfill our own responsibilities, but also provide a positive example for others. As the Bible says, "Whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Mark 8:35). By living out our faith, we can create a culture of respect and responsibility, where we value the rights of others and work together to build a better society.
