A. The Possibility of Dawn and the Power of Love

When love is put to the test, it sparks hope in the darkness. In the midst of suffering and pain, love reminds us that even in the darkest night, one might just discern the possibility of dawn. This is the power of love, which raises questions that point beyond the present moment and give us a glimpse of a brighter future. Love is the surest test of having life, and it is a test that has already been shown to be the test of being in the light (2:10). When we love, we are not just responding to the needs of others, but we are also reflecting the character of God, who is love (1 John 4:8).

B. The Three Tests of Love

In 1 Corinthians 13, the Apostle Paul describes three tests of love: the doctrinal test, the social test, and the missiological test. The doctrinal test involves a deep understanding of God's character and nature, which is revealed in the Bible. The social test involves a love for other believers and a willingness to serve and care for them. The missiological test involves a love that is not just confined to our own community, but that reaches out to those who are outside of it, including those who are broken and in need. When we pass these tests, we demonstrate that we are living a life of love that is truly reflective of God's character.

C. The Hope of Love

When love is put to the test, it sparks hope in the darkness. This is because love serves as a basis for our hope that God has reconciled himself to us and will therefore save us from the eschatological wrath that will be poured out on the final day (1 Corinthians 13:5, 9). This hope receives its greatest expression in the new command of Jesus, which is to love one another as he has loved us (John 13:34-35). When we love, we are not just responding to the needs of others, but we are also reflecting the character of God, who is love (1 John 4:8). And it is this love that gives us the hope of a brighter future, a future that is filled with the possibility of dawn, even in the darkest of nights.
