Your Question:

How do we find joy in everyday moments when life gets busy?

Answer:

As a pastor of a local evangelical church, I've seen firsthand how easily our schedules can become misaligned with our values. Stephen Covey's words have stuck with me: "We achieve inner peace when our schedule aligns with our values." When we prioritize what truly matters, we begin to experience a sense of peace that eludes us when we're consumed by anxiety and busyness.

In my own life, I've found that joy can be elusive when I'm chasing after happiness as an idol. As Pascal so astutely put it, "Amuse me is the theme" in our culture, and when we're not amused, we're left with the dreadful quiet of boredom. But joy is not something we find in fleeting pleasures or external sources; it's a deep satisfaction that comes from living a life that's aligned with our values and connected to something eternally wonderful and beautiful – namely, God. As Augustine said, "True happiness is to rejoice in the truth, for to rejoice in the truth is to rejoice in you, O God, who are the truth."

For me, joy has been cultivated through slowing down and practicing the presence of God. When I take the time to rest and reflect, I find my consciousness naturally turning to God. This isn't always easy, and it's often humbling, but it's also incredibly joyful. I've also seen this principle play out in my work as a pastor, where I've seen people experience joy when they're doing something that resonates with their values and connects them to others. As Angela Duckworth's parable illustrates, when we see our work as a calling that aligns with our values, we experience joy.
