Marriage is an exclusive relationship in which a man and a woman commit themselves to each other in covenant for life and, on the basis of solemn vows, become one flesh physically (Gen. 2:24; Mal. 2:14; Matt. 19:4-6). The seventh commandment, which prohibits adultery, is often seen as the foundation of marriage (Exodus 19:5). The Bible views marriage as a covenant between two people, and as such, it is a lifelong commitment (Mark 10:6-9). This commitment is based on the idea that marriage is a union between two people who become one flesh (Genesis 2:24).

The Bible also views marriage as a relationship that reflects the relationship between God and his people. In the Old Testament, prophets compare God to a faithful husband who loves and cares for his people (Hosea 1:2-3). Similarly, in the New Testament, Jesus compares himself to a bridegroom who loves and cares for his bride, the church (John 3:29). In the Bible, marriage is also seen as a means of glorifying God. Similarly, in 2 Corinthians 6:14, Paul says that believers should not be yoked together with unbelievers, including in marriage.
