The Meaning of Life: A Biblical Perspective

The Futility of Life without God

When everything feels like a never-ending struggle, the meaning of life can be a daunting question. Many people experience existential struggles that cannot be soothed by the truism that it will all work out in the end. In fact, such trials often involve the exercise of faith in a crucible where things don't always go as planned. The Bible teaches that without God, life is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:2). When we try to live consistently within the framework of an atheistic worldview, we shall find ourselves profoundly unhappy (Ecclesiastes 2:1-23). This is because success in life is seen as the individual's responsibility alone, and if someone is not supremely successful, they may feel like a failure.

The Purpose of Life: A Relationship with God

In contrast, when we have a personal relationship with God, we can face anything life throws at us without wavering (Romans 5:3-5). The Bible teaches that God disciplines us to get us into a central relationship with Him, where we can find purpose and meaning in life (Hebrews 12:5-11). This relationship with God is not just about avoiding pain, but about experiencing a profound sense of joy and fulfillment that comes from knowing and loving Him. The Bible teaches that God created us to know and love Him, and that our hearts are designed to respond to Him (1 John 4:19). When we have a relationship with God, we can find meaning and purpose in life, even in the midst of struggles.

The Hope of Eternal Life

The Bible teaches that life is not just about the present, but about the eternal future. When we place our trust in Christ as Savior and Lord, we can experience eternal life, which is beyond all comprehension (John 3:16). This hope of eternal life gives us the strength to face hardships and to persevere in our faith, even when life feels meaningless. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, and that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). When we have a personal relationship with God, we can trust that He is working everything out for our good, and that He will give us the strength to face whatever challenges come our way.
