Can I Ever Forgive?

The Importance of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of the Christian life. It is not just about releasing someone from guilt, but also about releasing ourselves from the burden of resentment and bitterness. As the Bible says, "Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2). When we choose not to forgive, it can bring death into our lives in one form or another. On the other hand, forgiveness brings life and healing.

The Connection between Forgiveness and Being Forgiven

The connection between our forgiving and being forgiven is graphically expounded in the Bible. Jesus teaches us that if we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us. This is not a condition of being forgiven, but rather a reflection of our heart's attitude towards God. As Jesus says, "If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:14-15). This means that forgiveness is not just about releasing someone from guilt, but also about releasing ourselves from the burden of our own sin.

The Process of Forgiveness

It is a two-way street, and it requires us to be willing to let go of our pride and our desire to be right. By doing so, we can experience the freedom and healing that comes from forgiveness.
