The Problem of Love Becoming a Daily Choice

In our culture, love is often associated with intense emotional feelings, and it is easy to get caught up in the idea that feelings of love are the basis for actions of love. However, the Bible teaches that actions of love can lead consistently to feelings of love. This means that we have the power to choose to act lovingly, even when we don't feel like it. In fact, the Bible says that the choice to act lovingly is the test and ultimate proof of love.

When we choose to love someone, we are not just choosing to feel a certain way; we are committing to persistently surrender to God and to serve one another. This means that we must make a choice to love our spouse every day, even when it's hard. We must choose to put their needs before our own, to forgive them when they wrong us, and to seek to understand them even when we disagree. This kind of love is not based on feelings, but on a commitment to God and to one another.

In the context of marriage, this means that we must choose to love our spouse even when the initial emotional excitement has worn off. We must choose to love them when we're feeling tired, stressed, or frustrated. We must choose to love them when they're not being lovable. And we must choose to love them when we're tempted to give up on the relationship. This kind of love is not easy, but it is possible, and it is the key to a happy and fulfilling marriage. As Paul says, "Seek to serve one another rather than to be happy, and you will find a new and deeper happiness." (1 Corinthians 7:3-5) When we choose to love our spouse in this way, we will find that our love grows deeper and more stable over time, and that our marriage becomes a source of joy and fulfillment in our lives.
