Biblical Answer

The presence of false prophets is a reality that cannot be ignored. In the Bible, prophets like Isaiah and Jesus Christ and his apostles made historical claims that were either true or not true. The fulfillment of these prophecies is undeniable, yet this does not necessarily mean that the prophets were always right. In fact, the Bible warns of the existence of false prophets who will secretly bring in damnable heresies and deny the Lord who bought them (2 Peter 2:1). These false prophets are characterized by their ability to make predictions that come true, not because of any divine guidance, but rather because they get their information from guesswork or from their lord, Satan.

False prophets are often mistaken for true prophets because they may possess some level of accuracy in their predictions. However, a biblical prophet is a servant of God who must predict with 100 percent accuracy. To be less accurate is to be proven false, which is unacceptable in a biblical prophet. In contrast, false prophets may get their information from various sources, including guesswork or demonic influence. This is why the Bible warns against following false prophets, as they can lead people astray and cause them to deny the Lord who bought them. The New Testament also warns that many false prophets have gone out into the world, and that the world will never be without them (1 John 4:1).

In order to discern true prophets from false ones, we must rely on the Bible's teaching on the characteristics of a true prophet. A true prophet is one who speaks the word of God, not human error. They are not popular, but rather uncomfortable to be around, as they often speak truth that is difficult to hear. They are also not motivated by personal gain or recognition, but rather by a desire to serve God and His people. In contrast, false prophets are often characterized by their desire for popularity and recognition, and their predictions are often motivated by a desire for personal gain or power. By understanding these characteristics, we can discern true prophets from false ones and avoid being led astray by false prophecy.
