Your Question:
Can I still find joy and hope in the midst of suffering?
Answer:
As a pastor and a Christian, I firmly believe that joy and hope are possible even in the midst of suffering. The Bible tells us that misery persists, but the scales are tipped in favor of joy because the King is seated, and the celebration has begun in heaven. We are loved more than we can ever imagine, and there are tastes of heaven available to us even now. The key to experiencing joy in suffering is to look for it, to welcome it, and to acknowledge that we were wrong to doubt God's goodness and power. We must return to the cross and appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did, his willingness to become like us and give up everything. This can give us the power to consider it joy, even in the midst of sorrow. As the Bible says, "It is a no-risk proposition. The worst that can happen is that you will honor God" (Ps. 126:1-2). For me, as a Christian, I know that joy is not the opposite of suffering, but rather a companion to it. I can see this at funerals, where people come together to grieve and to remember that death is not the last word. We can experience both joy and depression, and joy can be a rock that stands firm even in the midst of relentless rain. By looking to the cross and appreciating God's love, I can find joy even in the midst of suffering.
