Understanding God's Sovereignty in Suffering

The question of why God allowed us to lose everything can be a challenging one to answer, especially when we have a faulty theology of suffering that expects God to heal us because He loves us. However, this perspective neglects the sovereignty of God over all creation, including our lives. God is not obligated to give us everything we ask for, just as He is not bound by our prayers or actions. In fact, He may use our troubles to make us stronger and more dependent on Him.

God's Love and Sovereignty

The doctrine of election tells us that we are Christians because God chose to set His love on us, not because we deserved it or because it was useful to Him. Similarly, God's decision to allow us to suffer or lose everything is not based on our worthiness or actions. Instead, it is an expression of His love and sovereignty. He may allow us to experience hardship so that we can learn to depend on Him, just as He did when He bore our sins in His own body on the cross.

The Importance of Trust and Obedience

Rather than focusing on why God allowed us to lose everything, we should focus on trusting in His goodness and sovereignty. We should ask ourselves, "What did God teach me through my troubles?" or "How can I use this experience to make me a better person?" By doing so, we can learn to trust God's love and sovereignty, even in the midst of suffering. We should not assume that God is making us jump through hoops or that He is on a divine ego trip. Instead, we should recognize that He is the One Who suffered for us and is working all things together for our good. As we trust in Him, we can learn to obey Him and bring all our requests to Him, knowing that He loves us too much to give us everything we ask for.
