The question of identity without a job is a complex one, especially in today's society where our sense of self is often tied to our profession. The concept of identity is multifaceted and can be understood in various ways. According to Paul Ricceur, our identity is an "ipse identity," which is a constancy over time that consists in us holding ourselves to certain commitments, roles, or activities. This means that our sense of self is deeply connected to what we do and how we perceive ourselves.

However, when we lose our job, our sense of identity can be severely impacted. We may feel lost, uncertain, and without a clear direction. This is because our profession has become a significant part of our identity, and without it, we may struggle to find our place in the world. But this is where the biblical concept of identity comes into play. According to the Bible, our identity is not defined by our profession, but by our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light" (1 Peter 2:9). This means that our identity is not tied to what we do, but to who we are in Christ.

You are still a child of God, a beloved son or daughter, and a part of the royal priesthood. Your sense of identity may be shaken, but it is not lost. In fact, this can be a great opportunity to re-evaluate your priorities and find a new sense of purpose. As the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). So, even in the midst of uncertainty, you can still have a sense of identity and purpose because your identity is rooted in your relationship with God.
