Can I Still Have a Purpose in Life Without God?

The question of whether one can have a purpose in life without God is a complex one. On one hand, some people may argue that purpose can be found in personal happiness, relationships, or achievements. However, from a biblical perspective, our purpose in life is not found in these things, but rather in fulfilling the reason God created us: to glorify Him (Colossians 1:16). Without God, life is reduced to mere chance and has no inherent meaning or purpose.

As the ancient writer of Ecclesiastes noted, if there is no God, then our lives are not qualitatively different from those of animals (Ecclesiastes 3:19). Our existence would be nothing more than a cosmic accident, with no ultimate purpose or direction. This is a bleak and hopeless outlook, as it suggests that our lives are ultimately meaningless and without significance. In contrast, the Bible teaches that our purpose is not just to exist, but to live for what matters, and to glorify God in all that we do (Matthew 5:16).

While it may be tempting to try to find purpose in life without God, the Bible warns us that this is a futile endeavor. Without a relationship with God, we are left to our own devices, and our attempts to find purpose will ultimately be in vain. As the Bible says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). Without God, we are left to our own sinful nature, which is prone to deception and self-deception. In contrast, a relationship with God provides us with a clear sense of purpose and direction, and enables us to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Ultimately, our purpose in life is found in a relationship with God, and not in our own efforts to find meaning and purpose without Him.
