Navigating uncertain times when our values are constantly being challenged requires a deep understanding of what is truly important to us. As a pastor, I've seen many individuals struggle with this very issue. It's easy to get caught up in the world's priorities and lose sight of what truly matters. But as Cornelius Van Til so aptly puts it, "Talk about values implies that some things are preferable to others, and values tell us what things should be like, not just what they are like." We must intentionally evaluate our values and prioritize them accordingly.
In my own life, I've found that aligning my schedule with my values has been crucial in achieving inner peace. As Stephen Covey so wisely said, "We achieve inner peace when our schedule aligns with our values." This means being intentional about how I spend my time and energy. As a husband, father, and pastor, my values are centered around my family, my faith, and my community. When my schedule gets out of alignment with these values, I feel anxious and drained. But when I prioritize my values, I feel a sense of peace and purpose.
So how do we navigate uncertain times when our values are being challenged? First, we must be willing to examine our values and priorities. This requires a willingness to take an honest look at ourselves and our motivations. As Van Til notes, "We must take care not to squander the gift of time - moments that, once used, can never be recaptured." By being intentional about our values and priorities, we can avoid wasting time and energy on things that don't truly matter. Second, we must be proactive in seeking God's guidance and strength. This means making time for prayer, reflection, and seeking wisdom from others. Finally, we must be willing to adapt and adjust our priorities as needed. As the Bible says, "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:10) By keeping our eyes fixed on God and our values in alignment, we can navigate uncertain times with confidence and peace.
