Your Question:

Can I still have a fulfilling life without my life savings?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with the idea that their life's purpose is tied to their material wealth. I believe that's a flawed perspective. Jesus taught us that true fulfillment comes from living a life that honors God, not from accumulating wealth. In fact, He said, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20)

I've also seen that when people focus solely on their own interests, they often end up feeling empty and unfulfilled. As the philosopher Kai Nielsen said, "If there is no immortality, then all things are permitted." But that's not a recipe for a happy or meaningful life. In fact, it's often the opposite. When we prioritize our own selfish desires above all else, we can become isolated and lonely. My wife Susan and I have seen this play out in our community, where people who have devoted their lives to accumulating wealth often end up feeling unfulfilled and disconnected from others.

For me, the key to a fulfilling life is finding a sense of purpose that goes beyond my own interests. As a pastor, I've been given a ministry from the Lord, and I strive to be faithful to it every day. When I'm living out that ministry, I feel a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that I wouldn't find in accumulating wealth or pursuing my own selfish desires. And I believe that's true for anyone who is living a life that is centered on God's purposes, rather than their own.
