The Loss of Self and Identity: Understanding the Purpose of God

The loss of sense of self, job, business, family, and self-worth can be a profound and overwhelming experience. As a Christian, I believe that this experience can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of God's purpose for our lives. According to the Bible, we were created by God to create and to bring glory to Him through our actions (Genesis 1:26-31). When we fail to create in a thoughtful and worshipful manner, we can feel a sense of failure and shame, which can lead to low self-worth.

However, I would argue that the loss of self and identity is not solely due to our own failures or shortcomings. Rather, it can be a result of trusting in other people and things to bring us fulfillment and happiness, rather than in God. When we put our trust in others, we can become disappointed and disillusioned when they fail us. This can lead to a sense of identity crisis and a loss of purpose. Furthermore, when we focus on ourselves and our own self-worth, we can become consumed by pride, selfishness, and a desire for control. As the Bible says, "You are not your own; you were bought at a price" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Our identity and worth are not rooted in ourselves, but in our relationship with God.

In this sense, the loss of self and identity can be a liberating experience, as it forces us to re-evaluate our values and priorities. When we let go of our need for control and self-worth, we can begin to see ourselves as God sees us - as beloved children, created for His purposes and glory. This can lead to a deeper sense of purpose and fulfillment, as we learn to trust in God's sovereignty and provision. As the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). By trusting in God's plan and purpose for our lives, we can find a sense of identity and self-worth that is rooted in Him, rather than in ourselves.
