Your Question:

Can I still find peace in my life despite my chronic pain?

Answer:

As a pastor and a man of faith, I've seen many people struggle with chronic pain and find it difficult to maintain peace in their lives. The Bible teaches us that we can find peace despite our circumstances, but it requires us to look unto Jesus and receive peace from Him. When we try to worry our way out of problems, we destroy His effectiveness in us, and we deserve whatever we get.

It's easy to get caught up in the idea that we can find peace by avoiding hardships or medicating our emotions, but this approach lacks the skill of growing through our trials. As the Bible says, "all suffering is intended to train us to fix our eyes on the true God." Depression, regardless of its causes, is a time to answer the deepest and most important questions: Whom will I trust? Whom will I worship? By confronting these questions and reorienting ourselves to the nature of the human heart, we can find a deeper sense of peace and purpose.

I've seen this play out in my own life and in the lives of those I've counseled. When we're rooted in the pursuit of hedonism and trying to escape our pain, we become compulsive, addictive, and running from our healing. But when we're rooted in the inner life of God, we begin to grow the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, including peace, patience, and kindness. It's not easy, and it's not always immediate, but with time and practice, we can find a sense of peace that's not dependent on our circumstances, but on our relationship with Jesus.
