Understanding the Nature of Our Resurrection Bodies

The Bible teaches that our resurrection bodies will be like the body of Jesus, which was a human body made perfect. Jesus' resurrection body was not just a spirit or a ghost, but a tangible, flesh-and-blood body that could eat and be recognized by others (Luke 24:39-43). This suggests that our resurrection bodies will also be physical, but in a perfected state. The Bible says that we will be transformed into a new body, one that is like the glorious body of Christ (Philippians 3:21).

The Continuity Between Our Present and Future Bodies

The Bible also teaches that there will be a continuity between our present bodies and our future resurrection bodies. Just as the first Adam had a body of dust, so we have bodies made of dust, but just as the second Adam, Jesus, had a body made perfect, so we will have bodies that are perfected. This means that our resurrection bodies will not be completely different from our present bodies, but will be a transformation of them. The Bible says that we will bear the image of the Man of heaven, just as we now bear the image of the Man of dust (1 Corinthians 15:49).

The Nature of Our Resurrection Bodies in Heaven

Our resurrection bodies will be physical, but imperishable, meaning they will not wear out or die. They will be suitable for the life we will live in heaven, which will be a place of great joy and intimacy with God. We will be able to recognize and know one another in heaven, suggesting that our resurrection bodies will be recognizable and familiar to us. The Bible teaches that we will have bodies in heaven that are made perfect, just like Jesus' resurrection body, and that we will be able to live in a specific place at a specific time, just like Jesus does now. Our resurrection bodies will be a transformed version of our present bodies, but one that is perfected and suitable for the life we will live in heaven.
