Biblical Answer

The Bible has a lot to say about lying, and it is clear that God views lying as a serious sin. The Bible teaches that lying is a violation of the truth, and it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18). Jesus said, "I am... the truth" (Jn 14:6), and he has given us the Spirit of truth (John 14:17). Lying is a problem because it comes from Satan, who delights in falsehood (John 8:44). God, on the other hand, is not a liar, and it is impossible for him to lie (Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18).

The Bible warns against lying in many places, including Proverbs 19:5, which says that a false witness will not go unpunished, and Hebrews 3:12-13, which says that we should not be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Jesus himself issued a warning about lies in Matthew 5:37, saying, "Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No." The Bible also teaches that lying is a great sin against God, against the Church, and against love (Colossians 3:9-10). In fact, the Bible says that all liars will be found in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur far from the heavenly city (Revelation 21:8).

The consequences of lying are serious, and the Bible teaches that we should not be ashamed to tell the truth, even if it is difficult (2 Timothy 2:15). Those who are caught in lies feel the consequences of shame, and one little lie can turn into two little lies, and so on (Proverbs 10:18). The Bible also teaches that God disciplines those who lie, so they can present themselves as being truthful, never being ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15). Ultimately, the Bible teaches that lying is a barrier to a personal relationship with God, and that we must turn from lies and seek the truth in order to be saved (John 14:6).
