Discovering God's Purpose for Our Lives

Our purpose in life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. This is the fundamental distinguishing characteristic shared by all humanity. God made us able to know Him and respond to Him. Our purpose is not to achieve success or gain significance, but to display the glory of God in human life. We are not here for our own purpose, but for the purpose of God.

Understanding God's Sovereignty

God is sovereign over all things, and His purpose is not to make us beautiful, plump grapes, but to make us grapes so that He may squeeze the sweetness out of us. His purpose is to enable us to see that He can walk with us through the storms of life, and to give us ultimate security and significance through a relationship with Him. We must learn to surrender our ways and trust in God's sovereignty, even when we don't understand His purposes.

Finding Our Purpose in Christ

Our purpose in life is not to find out what God's purposes are, but to live a life hidden with Christ in God. We are to take our circumstances and ask ourselves what reactions to them the gospel of God requires of us. By trusting in God's sovereignty and His economy of salvation, we can understand the eternal purpose of God and live a life that displays His glory. Our purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, and to live a life that is surrendered to His will. We must learn to depend on Him and His power now, and to trust that He will accomplish all that He intends in His overarching purposes.
