Your Question:
What if I lose my sense of self?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with the concept of losing their sense of self. It's a paradox, really - we're told to lose ourselves in order to find our true selves. I think this is what Jesus meant when he said, "Whoever loses their life will save it" (Luke 9:24). It's not about losing our physical existence or our soul, but about letting go of our ego and our self-centeredness. When we focus too much on ourselves, we become stagnant and unable to grow spiritually. We become like a ship tied to the dock, unable to venture out into the great depths of God. But when we surrender our self-will and submit to God's will, we begin to experience spiritual discernment and growth. We start to know what we should do and we do it, and that's when we know more. It's a process of giving up our old self and allowing God to give us a new, original self that is rooted in Christ. I think this is what the Bible means when it says, "Fulfillment in life centers on Christ, not self" (Phil. 3:12-14). When we focus on Christ and serving Him, we find our true identity and purpose. We're no longer controlled by our self-will, but by God's will. And that's when we experience true freedom and fulfillment. As I always tell my congregation, "Give up yourself, and you will find your real self." It's a paradox, but it's one that has the power to transform our lives.
