The Mystery of Suffering

When faced with chronic pain, it's natural to wonder why God is testing us with such suffering. However, the Bible teaches that God is not testing us in the same way that humans would. He doesn't delight in our pain, but rather, He uses it as a means to bring us closer to Himself. The Bible says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This doesn't mean that God causes pain, but rather, He can use it to bring about good in our lives.

The Purpose of Suffering

So, why does God allow suffering? The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all things, and nothing happens apart from His knowledge and will. This means that when we suffer, God is not absent or uninvolved. He is actively working in our lives, even when we don't understand what is happening. The Bible says, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). This doesn't mean that God causes pain, but rather, He can use it to bring about good in our lives.

Trust in God's Sovereignty

When we are faced with suffering, it's easy to doubt God's love and care for us. But the Bible teaches that God is a loving Father who is actively working in our lives. He doesn't ask us to believe because He is on a divine ego trip, but rather, He wants us to trust Him with the mysteries of suffering. The Bible says, "Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us" (Psalm 62:8). When we trust in God's sovereignty, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of suffering. We can say with the psalmist, "I know that you are present with me, and that you will be present with me when I walk through the valley of the shadow of death" (Psalm 23:4). This doesn't mean that we won't experience pain, but rather, we can find hope and comfort in the midst of it.
