The Problem of Suffering

The question of why God allows good people to suffer when he's all-powerful is a complex and age-old problem. It can be approached from several angles. First, we must consider the possibility that God permits suffering for the good of someone else. This can occur when an individual voluntarily assumes suffering, as in the case of Jesus Christ. However, this doesn't necessarily address the issue of gratuitous suffering, where no apparent good comes from the suffering.

One way to address this issue is to consider the constraints on God's reasons for allowing suffering. If God is perfectly loving, he may have overriding reasons for allowing suffering that we cannot see. Just as we may permit suffering in order to bring about a greater good, God may have a similar motivation. This doesn't mean that God is not all-powerful, but rather that his power is exercised in a way that is consistent with his character as a loving God.

In the Bible, we see examples of suffering that are used by God to bring about a greater good. For instance, the suffering of Job was used by God to demonstrate his sovereignty and to show that his people can trust in him even in the midst of suffering. Similarly, the suffering of Jesus Christ was used by God to bring about our salvation. In both cases, the suffering was not gratuitous, but rather was used by God to bring about a greater good. This suggests that God's reasons for allowing suffering are not always apparent to us, but are rather part of his larger plan to bring about our good and his glory.
