Can I still have a sense of control with a terminal illness?
The Sovereignty of God and Our Suffering
As we navigate the complexities of suffering and illness, it's essential to acknowledge the sovereignty of God. His wisdom decides the outcome of each individual case, whether it's a terminal illness or a prolonged struggle with addiction. Our role is to ask Him and wait for His answer, whether it's yes, no, or a continued call to prayer. This understanding frees us from the burden of trying to control or manipulate the outcome, allowing us to trust in God's goodness and purpose.
Faith in the Face of Fear
Fear is a natural response to the unknown, and suffering can evoke profound fear. However, we must not let fear dictate our actions. Instead, we can choose to seek the Lord and trust in His promise to be with us in the midst of suffering (Deuteronomy 31:6). Just as a doctor is needed by the sick, not the healthy, we can recognize our need for God's help in times of struggle. By putting our trust in Christ, we can find the strength to face our fears and walk through the darkness with hope and confidence.
A Life of Faith and Obedience
While we may struggle with feelings of powerlessness or helplessness, we must not give in to passivity. We must do battle with depression's tendencies toward passivity and seek the Lord with a sense of urgency. As the Bible reminds us, "Before I was afflicted I went astray; but now I keep your word" (Psalm 119:67). This means that even in the midst of suffering, we can choose to live a life of faith and obedience, trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, and seeking His guidance and strength to navigate the challenges we face. By doing so, we can find a sense of control and purpose, even in the midst of uncertainty and pain.
